For your information: Did you know that most wedding cakes today are "fake"? That may surprise you - but yes, most cakes nowadays are purely for show, for decoration and for "tradition". This means that the cake "skeleton" is Styrofoam. And over the Styrofoam, the cake designer applies a beautiful covering made of either Butter Creme or Fondant frostings. Butter Creme is the more traditional frosting. Fondant is a very smooth flat-looking frosting that has become increasingly popular in recent years. To it, the designer adds curly Q's and other special designs. The foam base is usually "rented" to you and is generally returned to the cake designer following the event. So, what you are really paying for is the beautiful design which the cake designer creates for you. And even though the cake center is "Styrofoam", the design creation takes just as much time as a "real cake" has in the past. (And a typical cake can take up to 20 hours to design and create!)

Most wedding cakes are three to four layers (and four layers really looks the best). Typically only the top layer is a real edible cake - and this is the one that the bride and groom ceremoniously rub all over each other's faces. And it is also the one that goes home with the newlyweds - and by long tradition, goes into the freezer - to be eaten by the couple on their first anniversary (Yummy!).
For whatever reason, the cake cutting tradition usually comes at the end of the reception and then the problem becomes, "Who is going to eat all of this cake?" and "What do we do with the leftovers?" That might be one reason the "fake" cake scenario has evolved. But, don’t get us wrong … The “Fake Cakes” are still beautifully and ornately decorated. They’ll make you look good!
So, given the above information, what do the guests eat at the reception or wedding? Our suggestion is one of many beautiful and delicious cakes now available in full or half sheets. These can be ordered in a variety of flavors and can be decorated in your wedding colors. And a half sheet will typically feed 48 people. You can't beat this option! You might also consider adding or substituting cheesecake, cookies, or other delectable munchies of various kinds. Cake is kind of more "traditional" but nowadays, you have many options. (See our "Reception and Party Munchies" pages to find the right catered food combinations for your wedding or other gathering. See Catered Menu Options.)
Cakes come in various shapes - including round, square, heart, flower petal, and others. Cakes can be created around any color or theme that you desire. And with a three or four-layer cake, the base cake is quite large and each layer gets smaller as you go up. The cake can have added accessories - such as a fountain with water, flowers to match your wedding colors, ladders, columns and more. Ribbon is often used as a part of the cake design around the various layers. And there are various options for the top of the cake. You could have bride and groom initials, bells, flowers, a cute - or charming (handsome for the guys) - ceramic Bride and Groom in various antics - or other creative and fun elements. Finished cakes look nice on their own tables, as the centerpiece of the buffet tables, with satin ribbons and sashes, and under gazebos or arches.

With all of these options available to you, it is your opportunity to help create your own cake design and presentation. Look through books and on the web to find cakes that you like - or even dream up your very own. Then, take these thoughts and pictures to our Momma Lou. She can envision this with you and then can create the glorious and wonderful cake of your dreams - made special just for you.
And for your budgeting ... Most four layer cakes begin at $350 (butter creme) and $425 (for fondant) and go up from there - depending upon your combination of selected options. The guest cakes are an added expense.
